Father’s Day Lunch with Shepherd’s

Father’s Day Lunch with Shepherd’s

It may not come as a surprise that ahead of Father’s Day lunch each year, sales of our famously scrumptious pies go through the roof.  It’s an easy, affordable lunch that most Dad’s love, and having a box of pies waiting in the fridge to bake off cuts time wasted in the kitchen prepping lunch – so there’s more time for fun!

This year, we thought we’d have a little fun ourselves with the three dads who own and run Shepherd’s – Michael Shepherd, Jack Mitri and Demi Sclavos.  Professional pie bakers, purveyors and (of course) eaters, these three know their pastry and have created many of the delicious, world-flavour inspired pies available at Shepherd’s today.

We sat down with them and chatted pies, future filling ideas and what they’d love to be doing this Father’s Day lunch.  PLUS scroll down to the bottom of our interviews to find a special Father’s Day offer just for you!

Which is your favourite Shepherd’s pie: It would have to be our creamy Chicken Fricassee

How often do you eat a pie at work? Less now than I used to, but I would still eat two pies for lunch, about twice each week.  What!?  It’s quality control!

What would be your ultimate pie filling combination?  It would be like a Greek-style Sunday Roast pie – slow roasted lamb shoulder, kipfler potatoes, the works.  Even Yorkshire puddings, they’re not Greek but they could go in there too to create a real carb overload!

What does your ideal Father’s Day look like?  It would be spent in Crete, drinking a cold frosted glass of Xarma beer at the Chania Port, with the whole family together in the sunshine.

Which is your favourite Shepherd’s pie:  Definitely the Lamb Shank and Red Wine.

How often do you eat a pie at work? About five per week, in a good week!

What would be your ultimate pie filling combination?  One of my favourite dinners is a Pork Roast, with all the trimmings.  So I’m thinking if we could create a pie with that as a filling, even with the crackling in there, and some nice vegetables like broccolini, that would be amazing.  Something different.

What does your ideal Father’s Day look like?  Just a quiet day with the family, somewhere on a river bank.

Which is your favourite Shepherd’s pie: Our Beef and Beer Pie – anything with beer in it has got to be good!

How often do you eat a pie at work?  Not as often as I’d like to, because I’m actually lactose intolerant and our pastry is butter puff pastry.  Which is one of the reasons we’re working on a vegan pie at the moment so everyone can enjoy them!  We developed our Gluten Free range earlier in the year, so dairy free is the next challenge.

What would be your ultimate pie filling combination?  I love my Sunday BBQ at home, so any combination with kofta – ground mince beef with herbs, spices and onions – or lahem mishwee, which are Lebanese lamb skewers would be perfect.  Just add hommus, tabbouleh and extra chilli!  That would be one crazy pie, but I reckon it would be amazing.

What does your ideal Father’s Day look like?   Me, the kids and Disneyland.  I should bring the wife too, hey?
