Valentine’s Day Breakfast

Valentine’s Day Breakfast

With Valentine’s Day falling on a Sunday this year, the idea of a fancy breakfast in bed presents itself as a great opportunity for those who like to go all out to spoil their sweetheart.  Or, in my world, it presents itself as an easy option if you’re slightly ‘romantically lazy’ but still want to mark the day in a small way…

But what to cook?  Please not the same old toast and toppings you offered up for Mother’s Day/Father’s Day last year.  No bog-standard bacon and eggs is going to cut it on Cupid’s Day of Luuurvvvve.

Allow us to make some humble suggestions;

1) Toad in a Heart-Shaped Hole

This one is simple.  Toast a good-sized slice of Shepherd’s sourdough lightly, then use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out a shape in the middle of the toast.  Lay the toast on a greased baking tray, crack and egg in the middle and pop it into a hot oven until set.  For a really fancy version, follow the link here

2) ‘I Love You’ Fruit Toast with Red Fruit Salad

Red Fruit Salad

A fruit salad of raspberries, strawberries, cherries, watermelon and red grapes looks gorgeously festive in a small glass bowl, topped with a dollop of yoghurt.  Add some buttered hot fruit toast (we recommend our spelt sourdough with sour cherries to keep in theme!) on the side to provide carbs for slow release energy, and also just so you can use a cutesy toast stamper to print a message – you know you’ve always wanted to!

3) Heart-Shaped Muesli Pancakes

These look so sweet, and with no refined sugar (if you use Shepherd’s Double Toast Muesli with Agave Syrup) they’re not even terribly naughty!  This recipe makes them in the standard round shape but it’s easy enough even without any fiddly tools to pour your pancake batter into a heart shape.  Serve with strawberries on the side for that splash of Valentine’s Day red.
